HIP HING CONSTRUCTION 55 YEARS

Mr Patrick M S Kwan
Executive Director, Hip Hing Construction


It was in the 80s, as a young engineer Mr Kwan joined Hip Hing.
The pace of the local construction industry at the time can be
described as a stage of growth. The construction of the Hong Kong

Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) in Wanchai is one of the
most memorable projects which Mr Kwan had participated in the
early days of his career.

Development and the Hong Kong Trade
Development Council, HKCEC Phase 1 is
the first international standard convention
and exhibition facility being built in Hong
Kong. The HK$3-billion project was one of
the largest mixed-use developments in Hong
Kong in the 80s. Hip Hing was awarded the
main contract for the construction of this
massive and complex project.
Due to extremely tight development
schedule, the design work and construction
process were moving ahead simultaneously.
The amount of resources being put into the
project was enormous and unprecedented.
Finally, the prestigious project was completed
on schedule and earned satisfaction from all
stake holders.

In the 80s, Hip Hing also participated in
many famous projects in Hong Kong as well
as in mainland China such as: ATL Terminal
3, Kwai Chung; Shun Tak Centre Ferry Pier;
China Hotel in Guangzhou and Shanghai
Hilton Hotel, etc.
In the 90s, Hip Hing continued to go
strong and participated in many landmark
projects such as HKCEC new extension;
Hong Kong University of Science &
Technology and Times Square in Causeway
Bay, etc.
In the beginning of the new millennium,
Hong Kong was struck by the SARS and
the local construction industry took a sharp
downturn, Hip Hing was no exception. It
was at this critical period, Macau opened
its gaming industry to the world and
international investors flocked to territory.
