Liveable city plan outlined
The fourth year work report on the current-term government was released on July 5, 2016 by the Chief Executive, with “Improving Livelihood, Building for the Future” as its theme.
To plan for a competitive, liveable and sustainable Asia’s world city, the report said the government will continue conducting land development projects beyond 2030 and updating its development strategy. A public engagement exercise on the matter will be launched by the end of this year.
The government will continue the investigation and design work for the relocation of the Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works into caverns. It will be completed in phases from 2017 to 2022, with a view to starting the relocation works as soon as possible to release the 28 hectares of land the treatment plant site will provide for other use.
The report said Lantau Island has a critical role in Hong Kong’s sustainable development, so the government is planning to form the Lantau Development Office under the Civil Engineering & Development Department, to take forward the development and conservation items for Lantau and nearby outlying islands.
The government, in collaboration with the Lantau Development Advisory Committee, conducted public engagement activities from January to April and will use the data to draw up a new blueprint for Lantau's development and conservation in 2016 and 17.
The government is working to obtain funding approval from the Legislative Council to launch studies in 2016/17 for constructing artificial islands between Hong Kong Island and Lantau for the development of an East Lantau Metropolis.
It will be Hong Kong's third core business district and a long-term strategic growth area, which could help meet the city's social and economic development needs beyond 2030.
