SOCAM Development Ltd (SOCAM) recently announced the successful accreditation of Shui On Building Contractors Limited (SOBC), a subsidiary of SOCAM in public housing construction) in compliance with ISO50001: 2011 standard for energy management systems. Accordingly, SOBC becomes the first building contractor in housing projects that obtained the accreditation in Hong Kong.
     Commenting on the accreditation, Mr Stephen Lee, Executive Director of SOBC, said, "Housing construction is at the frontier of building a greener society. As a major contractor in Hong Kong, SOBC has pride to set a benchmark for the industry, and we will continue to furnish our expertise and innovation in the area for the betterment of our city." 
     To enhance energy efficiency at work sites, SOBC has tried and implemented new technologies in its projects. These include the use of electricity saving device in the Tseung Kwan O 73B Project achieving a 10% saving in electrical power consumption, and the application of LED luminaires for temporary lighting at the Shek Kip Mei Estate Phase 5 Project achieving a 16% reduction in electricity consumption.
     In addition to achieving energy efficiency through innovative ideas, SOBC has established an energy management system in accordance with ISO50001:2011 standards for systematic execution of energy efficiency in projects. From reviewing energy usage and setting targets, to implementing action plans and evaluation, a coherent work flow is now in place to ensure effective energy management during building construction.
     With the vision to build a greener environment for the society, a training program was arranged in the past months not only to equip our staff with knowledge on ISO50001 but also to promote a stronger awareness on energy efficiency, so that every member can make a contribution right at the work place.
     The Hong Kong Certification Services International Ltd. said, "SOBC presented evidence that is innovative and relevant to energy performance improvement, echoing their aim as a recognised leader among the practitioners in building industry."
