The Development Bureau is seeking more than $200 million to revitalise Mei Ho House as a hostel and Lui Seng Chun as the Baptist University Chinese Medicine & Healthcare Centre. It will seek funding approval from lawmakers in June.
Mei Ho House will accommodate 129 dormitories after revitalisation, offering hostel accommodation for budget travellers.
A museum of public housing will occupy the ground and first floors of one wing. The first floor will tentatively accommodate sample rooms restored to their original condition and feature furniture from the 1950s.
The hostel will also accommodate a canteen-style common room with kitchen, a reception area, a sitting-out area, amenities and communal space, office areas, store rooms and other ancillary facilities.
The estimated capital cost of the project is $202.3 million at September 2009 prices. The cost of structural repairs of the historic building and slope maintenance will be borne by the Government.
