HK$4.2 billion air cargo terminal construction contract awarded

A HK$4.2 billion construction contract was awarded to Gammon - Hip Hing to build Cathay Pacific's new cargo terminal.
The contract comprises the construction of an eight-storey warehouse in precast/insitu concrete; ramps to the warehouse and an office building.  It also includes co-ordination of Material Handling System (MHS); building services and finishing. The gross floor area is approximately at 280,000 square metres.
The new air cargo terminal in Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok is scheduled to be completed in 2013.
"Gammon-Hip Hing is delighted to have been awarded this project which will help enhance Hong Kong's status as an international airfreight hub. We are committed to working seamlessly to ensure the delivery of the terminal of the highest quality, whilst maintaining excellent standards of safety, " said Thomas Ho, Chief Executive of Gammon Construction.
"Awarded on a Contractor's alternative of precast and "system-build" insitu construction which combined to offer a high quality, high speed and cost effective solution, we are confident that the project will set new benchmarks for the industry," said Chu Tat Chi, Managing Director of Hip Hing Construction.
Other latest technologies including BIM (Building Information Modelling); electronic tagging of offsite components, and advanced document management and collaboration software will also be adopted to aid the project management.
A workforce of over 1,000 will be engaged at the peak of the project's construction period.
