Route 8 between Tsing Yi and Cheung Sha Wan opened
Route 8 is a trunk road linking Lantau and Sha Tin. The North Lantau Highway and Lantau Link completed in 1997 form part of this route. The remaining two sections are that between Tsing Yi and Cheung Sha Wan (R8-TYCSW) and that between Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin (formerly known as Route 16). The section of R8-TYCSW will provide an alternative route to Route 3 Tsing Yi and Kwai Chung Sections (Cheung Tsing Highway , Cheung Tsing Tunnel and Tsing Kwai Highway). It is connected to the west with Tsing Ma Bridge and Ting Kau Bridge . To the east, it is connected with West Kowloon Highway and the section of Route 8 between Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin. There will also be direct connections between this section of Route 8 and the road networks near Container Terminals 8 and 9 (CT8 and CT9).
 
This section of Route 8 comprises a 7.6 km dual 3-lane highway. The major elements of the project include:
  1. a 1.5 km road connecting the western portal of Nam Wan Tunnel with Cheung Tsing Highway (West Tsing Yi Viaduct);
  2. a 1.2 km twin tube tunnel at the southern part of Tsing Yi Island (Nam Wan Tunnel);
  3. a 1.1 km road connecting the eastern portal of Nam Wan Tunnel with Stonecutters Bridge (East Tsing Yi Viaduct);
  4. a 1.6 km high level bridge, with a centre span of 1,018 m, crossing Rambler Channel (Stonecutters Bridge);
  5. a 2.2 km road connecting Stonecutters Bridge with Lai Wan Interchange at Cheung Sha Wan (Ngong Shuen Chau Viaduct);
  6. access ramps connecting Route 8* with the local road network at CT8 and CT9; and landscaping works
  7. ancillary works including traffic control and surveillance systems, electrical and mechanical systems, geotechnical works, drainage works and environmental mitigation measures such as noise barriers, low noise road surfacing and
