The MTRC plans to develop a new architectural theme In Touch with Nature to guide major station improvement works of the East Rail Line in the future with the aim of offering passengers a travel environment that is both modern and comfortable.
Most of the current 15 East Rail Line stations are located along the Tolo Harbour coastline, set amongst natural scenery between green hills and the blue sea. The use of natural daylight and air circulation in the stations will be optimised to enhance ambiance and give prominence to the rich natural environment surrounding the stations.
The In Touch with Nature theme provides clear direction and guidelines for how stations should look and feel, taking the East Rail Line into its next century of serving Hong Kong. As a next step, the MTRC will invite architectural consultants to study the different stations and produce detailed design drawings for each using the new theme. Major improvement works is scheduled for completion in 2016.
Before the new architectural theme is implemented, the MTRC will carry out small-scale renovation works at East Rail Line stations in an ongoing programme to enhance the station environment. Improvements will include a consistent design for portals and more prominent signage to make it easier for passengers to identify the location of stations, enhanced lighting and ventilation systems; upgraded customer service centres; standardised station notices; new barriers and seating, and standardised station colour schemes.
