Shenzhen Airport to construct a second runway
Reclamation work has commenced at Shenzhen Airport. A total of 13.23 square kilometers of reclaimed land, equivalent to 1,852 standard size soccer fields, will be made available to build the second runway to meet growing traffic demand.
The US$7.5 billion contract includes construction of 26.6 kilometers of sea wall, drainage system, land fill, site preparation for the second runway and terminal building. The new runway will be 3,600 meters long and 500 meters wide (main runway 60 meters in width). The total land fill volume is estimated at 60 million cu m, which is approximately 4 million truck load. Upon completion of the new runway, Shenzhen Airport could handle 30 million travelers per annum and 1.5 million tones of cargo each year, which is the target set for 2015.
