The world's largest TBM is now in operation in Hong Kong
In Hong Kong, the "Tuen Mun - Chek Lap Kok" tunnel worksite is welcoming a newcomer: the world's largest tunnel boring machine. Specially designed for this worksite, the 17.6 metre wide device combines three innovations masterminded by the Bouygues Construction Research & Developmentteams. An outstanding partner for a far-reaching worksite.

This exceptional tunnel boring machine (TBM) includes three main innovations:
Mobydic: this is a system of sensors integrated into the TBM heads, it is possible to check that the cutting wheels are not too worn and to map the rock walls in real time.
Snake: unveiled at the Bouygues Construction Innovation Campus, this remotely controlled arm cleans and unclogs the TBM heads to make it easier to inspect them.
Telemach: this brand new innovation is used for the first time here. This robot, the peripheral cutting wheels can be changed mechanically.

Measuring 5 km in length and dug out 50 metres under the sea, the Tuen Mun - Chek Lap Kok tunnel will eventually provide access to Lantau Island and Hong Kong International Airport. A complex project, it requires working in an environment where the pressure is high (over 5 bars). Among the site's 800 workers, teams of divers carry out maintenance operations. It is a real technical challenge for the workers.
