Enhancing Hong Kong's Built Environment
Launched in 1996, HK-BEAM (the Hong Kong Building Environmental Assessment

The Master Architect Series III
Chen Shi Min
The architecture of Chen Shi Min can be read as a record in microcosm of Chinese architecture over the past 40 years¡Ðin particular, the blossoming of architecture in China in the past two decades. Within his oeuvre is found architecture scaled to the state, and architecture that responds to the more intimate scale of the community.
Here are buildings (57 selected projects) that are products of Chen Shi Min's early experience within a large, government-based architectural institute. More recent projects reflect the opening of China to the West since the 1980s. While most of the projects here are of recent vintage, together they capture the various phases of Chen Shi Min's career.
Through his work, Chen Shi Min endeavors to promote a new architectural language drawn from Chinese vernacular culture, its history, arts, traditional design philosophies, and methodologies, and express it through modern building technology. It is Chen Shi Min's view that this is the way to create a unique architecture that responds to the changing social context in China¡Ðwhat he calls "the pulse of the time."
Chen Shi Min is not only one of the most influential architects in China, but also one of the first to introduce Chinese architecture to other parts of the world. In 1994, in recognition of his accomplishments, he was awarded the title "Design Master," an honor given to less than a dozen architects of his generation in China.
The Master Architect Series III features the work of some of the world's leading architects and architectural firms in full color.
Each volume in the series includes an essay by an internationally recognized critic, or an introduction by the master architect. The projects selected for inclusion represent the projects selected for inclusion represent the most significant works from each stage of the architect's career, including works currently in progress. Project descriptions feature the architect's working drawings, plans and renderings, as well as full-color photographs, many in large format. |
