Thorn took full advantage of its new location at Frankfurt's Light+Building Fair (April 11-16) to reveal its most powerful LED story in years: the StyLED road lantern. The breakthrough design will be the first LED lantern capable of lighting major traffic routes that Thorn will market to municipalities when it becomes available this autumn. It was joined by the Clan urban lighting concept and the all-new Menlo range of direct/indirect modular fluorescents. Also presented was an array of other new generation products, including downlights, spotlights, floodlights and industrial luminaires.
Richard Hall, Marketing Director of the Thorn brand, said: "It's our biggest launch of production luminaires and concept models ever and shows our strength in Buildings and Surrounds, Road, Cityscape and Sports lighting. We have focussed on our Smart LEaDership programme - innovating to incorporate LED technology into solutions wherever it makes sense - and developed a number of next-generation LED products. Indeed, nearly three quarters of the 40 exhibits incorporate LEDs, a healthy sign for the future."
Key exhibits
1. StyLED road lantern
The flagship of Thorn's exterior offering, the futuristic StyLED lantern, moves LED road lighting up a gear. Available in two outlines and four lumen packages - from 3,000lm (45W) to 10,000lm (150W) - it caters for main roads as well as residential streets. Automatic graduation of luminous flux via an integrated timer underlines the trend for future road lighting design, while its sleek U-shape will attract admiring glances from motorists and pedestrians alike.

2. Clan (concept range)
Clan is a concept collection designed to bring performance, efficiency and harmony to urban spaces. The wide range of parts (three columns and two lanterns with three optics, including LEDs), linked by a single consistent design theme, will give great scope to the landscape architect and designer.
3. Menlo3
For interiors, Thorn revealed a replacement of the Menlo range with a family of recessed, semi-recessed and surface direct/indirect fluorescent modular luminaires: Menlo3. Targeting offices, schools, hospitals and retail areas it offers greater choice, better performance, and improved aesthetics through three optical choices, three geometric shapes and three mounting options.
4. Modular LEDs
The Cree LR24 Lay-in 58W LED module, which combines high efficacy (66lm/W) with excellent colour (Ra92), inspired a series of new fittings that saves on power and maintenance.
5. New PopPack
A new era of fluorescent pack type lighting. A radical fixing mechanism cuts installation times by more than half, while clever plug-on end modules facilitate LED emergency conversion and /or motion and daylight detection.
6. eControl
Latest developments in lighting controls include eControl, a new range of dimmable luminaires incorporating HFE ballasts, which provides simple, affordable and reliable dimming.
7. ecoCALC
Thorn presented a software programme to help specifiers calculate precisely the costs incurred by a lighting solution throughout its service life. The ecoCALC package not only calculates the investment cost, but factors in the financial aspects of an environmentally sound lighting system, including CO2 emissions, energy consumption, maintenance cost and waste disposal.
8. Motion based adaptive road lighting
Thorn unveiled the Comlight adaptive road lighting system. Intelligent sensors detect a vehicle's movement and illuminate it's journey through an urban scene, thus maximising security and comfort while minimising energy use. The light is dimmed when there is no activity and adjusts in real-time, rather than rely on historical traffic data.
9. OLED Lighting (concept model)
Thorn is working with Durham University and Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) to develop processes for printing polymeric material (25cm2) that emits white light using low-energy power. The project has the potential, powered by renewable energy, to take lighting off the electricity grid. Small panel devices were displayed, inside a task light.
These are only a selection of the products showcased, but they illustrate vividly the scope and potential of Thorn's new product development programme.
